To celebrate the summer launch of the “Good Times Around Michigan Ave” interactive walking tour, we are having a photo contest! Thirty lucky winners will receive free walking tours-for-two (choice of 10:00am, 1:30pm, and 4:30pm) on Friday, April 29th. To receive the tour, normally $26 ($52 prize value), guests must share a digital photograph that expresses a “good time” in Chicago. Image submissions will be accepted through posting on Chicago Detours Facebook page, or by
emailing to [email protected] by April 27th. Two submissions max per person. A brief description (30 words or less) can be included. Photos judged by our staff (not me!) on originality, expression of a “good time,” and visual appeal.
It will be fun to see the received submissions, which we will post on our Flickr and Facebook pages. In all we are giving away over $1,000 worth of tours to welcome people to our summer tour offerings.
The tour visits the present and former spots of grand balls, Jazz Age shows, elite soirees, speakeasies, theater performances, and more, as our highly trained guides share stories of both scandalous and wholesome forms of entertainment. Tour stops include the opulent late 19th-century mansion that is now the Driehaus Museum, the site of a very early jazz club, and the 1920s playhouse for the Shriners that is now the magnificent Intercontinental Hotel.
Ideas for photos? Be creative. It may or may not include people, though the most emotive photos have greater likelihood of winning. Vintage or contemporary. Color or black and white. It helps to be able to have a setting that shows where it’s at in the city, though not required. I’ve included two examples – one is friends Michael, Alison and I at a Sox game, having a blast in the rain. The other is a shot of local kids celebrating National Skateboarding Day last year.
