ARCHITECTURE OF MONEY AND POWER TOUR DEBUT DETAILS
Architecture on this financial district walking tour debut spans a century with styles ranging from refined Classical to sleek Art Deco and glittering Postmodernism. We’ll consider why bank buildings often look like temples, visit the largest and most technologically-advanced downtown building of the 1930s, and consider the symbolic meaning of Chicago skyscrapers. Architectural eye candy includes ornate carved stone details, massive murals, and sparkling Tiffany mosaics. Buildings visited include the Chicago Board of Trade, The Rookery, the Union League Club, the Federal Center, the Field Building, and more.
We’ll also see the “back door” of the Board of Trade. Here, on Van Buren, a time-warp exists in the middle of downtown Chicago. Historic bars and a pawn shop skulk beneath rickety ‘L’ tracks.
In addition to the architectural eye candy, tour guests will hear about the greed and generosity of power brokers of all pinstripes.
We’re excited to make this tour available to the public, so our Executive Director Amanda will lead the tour debut. After the tour concludes, tour guests are invited to join Amanda and the Detours team to an old-school pizza joint for free pizza and revelry to celebrate the launch of this new tour during our 10th anniversary year.
As one would expect from Chicago Detours, this walking tour explores stories and places locals don’t know. The guide will share either tell lesser-known stories behind famous buildings or step into overlooked buildings right in the heart of the financial district.
