What It’s About
This event in 2018 was a huge success! We sold out and had awesome speakers. Read about it in our recap here.
Come to “Badass Women in Chicago History,” a storytelling event for Women’s History Month! Chicago Detours has curated a fantastic lineup of speakers who will share stories of some of Chicago history’s often overlooked but no less badass women in the arts, politics, social activism, aerospace exploration, and even weaponry.
For “Badass Women in Chicago History,” the audience won’t hear names they already know, like Jane Addams and Gwendolyn Brooks. True to the Chicago Detours ethos of bringing people to explore stories and places locals don’t even know, the characters presented will be Chicago heroines on the peripheries of history.
This special for Women’s History Month will be at the Den Theatre in Wicker Park. We will donate a portion of the ticket sales to the Chicago Women’s Health Center, and everything from the raffle.
To bring the stories to life, the lively presenters that we have chosen will also share visual and audio elements like images and songs. Here is the line-up, in no particular order:
City of Chicago cultural historian Tim Samuelson has a special talent at making history fun and personal. He will tell the story of the woman he calls his “historical girlfriend.” She left Lake Geneva waitressing for Chicago and took up a rather unexpected occupation.
Ashley Ray Harris is a storyteller, comic, and creator of the “Badass Black Women’s History Month Project.” She will present the story of Charlene Mitchell, who made history as the first black woman to run for president in 1968.
Actor, performer and storyteller Krista Damico will share the story of Jeannette Piccard, a record-breaking balloonist and all-around renaissance woman.
Kyle Ann Sebastian, who works at the Chicago Foundation for Women, will share the life of Willie Barrow, an organizer known as the “Little Warrior” because, at 4’11”, she was a fierce fighter for social justice.
When: Mon, Mar 26th, 6:30 doors, show 7:00pm-8:15pm.
Where: “Cabaret Room” of the Den Theatre, 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave.
